This pair of armchairs, designed by Carl Malmsten (1888-1972) in the late 1940s, features block-shaped solid pine frames that highlight Malmsten’s architectural background. Subtle details, such as the curved armrest and backrest ends and the gently tilted backrests, lend balance to the bold, sculptural form, creating a sense of both solidity and refinement. This dialogue of mass and lightness, combined with the distinctive craftsmanship, makes the pair a fine example of mid-20th-century Swedish design. The model’s name, ‘Hängsits’, refers to the seemingly suspended seat and backrest that appear to “hang” between the sculptural pine supports.
