‘Gary’ (‘The Thumb’) easy chair, designed by Arne Norell. Produced by Gösta Westerberg in Sweden, 1952. Legs in beech, recently reupholstered in fabric with tufted buttons. Legs in good original condition, with wear consistent with age and use.

Designed by Swedish designer Arne Norell in 1952, this remarkable chair was presented the same year at the Önskehemsutställningen in Stockholm. Two years later, Norell established his own practice in Sundbyberg. The sculptural, thumb-shaped backrest is an immediate focal point, lending the chair both its distinctive silhouette and its name.
